An energy-based study of the embedded element method for explicit dynamics

Abstract The embedded finite element technique provides a unique approach for modeling of fiber-reinforced composites. Meshing fibers as distinct bundles represented by truss elements in matrix material mesh allows the assignment more specific properties each component rather than homogenization all properties. However, implementations available commercial software do not replace with elements. This causes redundancy volume calculation overlapping meshes leading to artificially increased stiffness and mass. paper investigates consequences energy calculations an explicit dynamic model due this redundancy. A method correction edundancy within code is suggested which removes extra shown be effective at correcting large amounts redundant volume.
